PEORIA (25 NEWS) - Police arrested a suspect connected to an apparent armed robbery in the early hours of Saturday morning.

20-year-old Damarious Matthews was arrested for armed robbery and transported to the Peoria County Jail.

Just before 1:30 a.m., officers were on routine patrol in the area of Sam J. Stone Avenue & William Kumpf Boulevard when they were approached by a male claiming he was robbed.

He told police he was giving someone a ride when the passenger pulled out a gun and demanded his money and phone. The suspect was described as a black male wearing a black hoodie and light colored jeans.

Police say they searched the area and found Matthews - who matched the description - running northbound in the 300 block of Romeo B. Garrett.

Police say a perimeter was set up and Matthews was successfully tracked down by a K-9 - police say he was hiding behind shrubbery.

A loaded gun was recovered, as well as the stolen phone and money.
