PEORIA (News 25) - Rep. Cheri Bustos from Illinois’s 17th congressional district, looks back on what it was like being in the House of Representatives while the capitol was under attack.

Bustos says the day began as usual. But she later noticed that something wasn’t right, after she saw a police officer approach House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, whisper something to her, and escort her from the floor. Not long after, the majority leader and majority whip are also escorted by police.

Bustos then tells of a member of congress showing her a live feed of the attack on their phone. At first, Bustos asked “When did this happen?” It was at this moment, that a commotion could be heard from outside the House floor.

A short time later, an officer of the Capitol police approached the microphone, and announced that everyone should be prepared to take cover, and that the Capitol had been breached.

Bustos then thought to let her family know that she was safe. After sending a text message, she found out that her family was unaware of what was happening at the time. After that, there was constant communication between her, and her friends and family.

As the members of Congress were still awaiting instruction, the commotion from outside was growing louder. But luckily, armed Capitol police entered the floor, and escorted everyone to safety.

Looking back on the ones who stormed the Capitol, Bustos stated “These people who claim that they were patriots, are as far from being patriots as anybody I can think of.” She also felt “disgusted” by what happened that day, and claimed that we have to “everything in our power to make sure that it never happens again.”
