Katthoefer Animal Building closing again as some big cats show symptoms of COVID-19
BLOOMINGTON (25 NEWS) - The Katthoefer Animal Building at the Miller Park Zoo is closing again - as COVID-19 positivity in the community dramatically increases and some of the cats are exhibiting symptoms again, including Rilu, the male Snow Leopard, who is struggling with COVID-induced pneumonia.
The first cat began coughing and had a raspy respiration beginning on November 20.
The other four cats are still under veterinary treatment.
“It is our obligation to do everything we can do for the animals here at the Miller Park Zoo,” said Jay Tetzloff, Zoo Superintendent, in a release.
No animals have received COVID vaccinations at the Miller Park Zoo, according to the release.
Staff have been evaluating and following other facilities that have given the vaccine and their results. Vaccinating the susceptible species will be initiated as soon as the vaccine is again available.
Masks are required at all indoor spaces at Miller Park Zoo.
