PEORIA (WEEK) - Martarius McGee was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

On Thursday morning, 18-year-old Matthew Smith was shot on East Thrush Ave.

On Saturday, McGee turned himself into police.

Monday morning, McGee was in court for a bond hearing.

Prosecutors say McGee brought the gun he used with him when he turned himself in.

He said he was the one who shot Smith, but he was acting in self defense.

McGee claims Smith shot first and he fired back.

McGee was not been charged with murder but prosecutors said there’s potential for it.

A family member of Smith said they don’t believe the self-defense claim, they said they don’t believe that Smith owned a gun.

McGee’s bail was set at $150,000, and his next court date is in late December.
