CUBA (25 NEWS) - The Olympics are well underway and in the town of Cuba, a group of young archers will have their eyes peeled on this year’s games. That’s because they might just be there themselves one day.

“They can go on to the Olympics with this,” Carol Strode, Cuba Archery coach, said.

In Cuba, an independent archery team of middle and high school students is making a name for themselves. The Cuba Archery Team won a national tournament in South Carolina this year, taking the top prize at the 2021 NASP/IBO 3D Open in Myrtle Beach.

“The national level, there’s 15,000 kids shooting,” Derek Strode, Cuba Archery coach, said. “So, for us to go to the Open and shoot and win something at a small school it’s quite an accomplishment.”

“I can’t even put it into words,” Tanner Brooks, Cuba Archery sophomore team member, said. “It’s crazy that such a small school can still do so well.”

The Cuba Archery Team began in 2014 and has been growing ever since, making the sport more accessible to just about anyone.

“We had a young lady that was in a wheelchair that shot,” Derek Strode said. “We’ve had several kids with broken bones that have shot.”

For the team in the tiny town, archery is all about hitting the mark and opening new doors.

“The first year we took a full team to Louisville, Kentucky,” Derek Strode said. “We took four kids out of the state of Illinois that have never been out of the state before and that was pretty neat.”

“I never thought I’d be able to go to Nashville or Myrtle Beach but this sport has allowed for people to go places and see different things that they’ve never seen before,” Brooks said.

As these doors open, the archers have something new to aim for.

“I could see scholarships being handed out and I could definitely see a future in this sport,” Brooks said.

“I’m hoping to make it a career eventually, but we’ll see where it takes me,” Andrew Barr, Cuba Archery junior team member, said.
