The Illinois Republican Party said it can no longer support the challenger to U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-Moline) after he posted a variety of conspiracy theories on social media.
The Moline Dispatch reports state GOP chairman Tim Schneider, Rock Island Republican Party central committee chair Drue Mielke, and 17th District state central committeeman Jan Weber all pulled their support of Republican Bill Fawell of Galena's campaign against the incumbent Democrat.
The three all cited posts on Fawell's campaign Facebook page touting theories about the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Sandy Hook school shooting and other events. Posts on Fawell's page cited by the Dispatch variously attribute the 2001 attacks to the CIA, former Vice President Dick Cheney, and a controlled demolition by the New York City Fire Department.
In a request for comment, Fawell told the paper he wasn't receiving support from the party anyway. He said being "excommunicated" by the party will help him appeal more to independent voters.
The 17th Congressional District covers parts or all of Peoria, Tazewell, Fulton, and Knox counties.
