EUREKA, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

25 News is fact checking reports about the city of Eureka draining its lake.

Contrary to other media reports, the mayor of Eureka said there are no Asian carp in Eureka Lake to his knowledge.

However, Mayor Scott Zimmer said they do plan to drain the lake in a week. He says the reason is fish overpopulation, mainly the common carp.

Zimmer says these carp are bottom feeders which disrupt the eggs of other gaming fish like bass and blue gill.

After advice from an independent study and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the city decided to drain the lake to bring the gaming fish population back up.

It will take two weeks for the lake to drain. The lake is expected to refill naturally by spring. The mayor says they haven't drained the lake in 30 years. The cost is unknown at this point.
