A comprehensive security plan is on the way for tenants living in Peoria Housing Authority sites. New PHA C.E.O. Jackie L. Newman said that while security measures are in place but she wants to make them better. Newman discussed ideas during a PHA security committeee meeting on Thursday. Peoria Police Sergeant Gerald McKean is head of the PHA security. He told the committe that residents living in Taft and Harrison Homes have not been responsible for crime and he does not consider those areas to be hot spots for violence. But McKean added problems happen when people come onto those properties late at night. Newman said the PHA will look at all options, including enhancing surveillance cameras, parking restrictions and working closer with Peoria police.
"It's working with the experts because we're not experts in all areas. So accessing our resources, collaborating with neighborhoods and neighborhood associations, ensuring that we are working with our council," she said.
Newman added PHA residents will also have input on the best ways to enhance security. Newman said she will have a comprehensive security proposal in mid October.
