UPDATE: Plane makes emergency landing on I-55 just north of Lincoln

LINCOLN, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

Update: 10:00 p.m. According to information provided by Illinois State Police, a plane made an emergency landing on Interstate 55 in the south bound late at approximately mile post 132.5.  This is just south of Exit 133 for Lincoln.  The crash involved one passenger vehicle around 2:37 p.m.

The Yellow Cessna, single engine plane was attempting to land at Logan County Airport, and for unknown reasons the aircraft lost power and was forced to make an emergency landing in the South bound lane of Interstate 55.  

During the landing the plane struck a passenger vehicle , 2016 Chevrolet Malibu, causing minor damage to the automobile.  The plane traveled through the median and came to rest on the left shoulder of the north bound lanes. 

The Cessna suffered damage to the landing gear and was towed from the scene. 

Sean Ramsey, Trooper, District 9 was dispatched to the scene of the accident.  "We got a report of a plane making an emergency landing here on the interstate," Ramsey said. 

The plane is registered to Kilo aviation from Lacon.  The pilot though, was from Indiana and tried to land on the southbound lanes of the roadway. 

"No injuries to the pilot or either of the passengers in the vehicle," Ramsey said. "I am not sure what reasons yet, why he lost power, attempted to regain power and was unable to do so.  Evidently he tried this several times and ultimately had to attempt an emergency landing here on the interstate. 

The pilot looked distressed and said he was glad no one was hurt.

"This is my 18th year and this is my first plane crash.  I is not something that happens a lot," Ramsey said. 

With an incident like this, traffic was backed up for miles. The incident is still under investigation.

The Illinois State Police is on scene of the landing. Traffic is reduced to one lane on I-55 northbound at mile post 133. 

The Marshall County Airport confirmed plane which landed on I-55 was registered out of Lacon. The Federal Aviation Administration's online database lists the owners of the Cessna 182B single-engine plane as Kilo Aviation LLC. 

Use caution if traveling through the area, or find another way. It is unknown how long travel will be impacted. 

There is no word on injuries.
