An Illinois state representative has filed legislation to allow legal consumer purchases of fireworks in the state.
State Rep. Barbara Wheeler (R-Crystal Lake) said Illinois is one of only four states in the nation to bar most citizens from purchasing the devices. House Bill 5928 would model the licensing, sale and purchase of fireworks on bills on existing laws in other states.
“Illinois is already an outlier in so many ways, and this another silly example,” said Wheeler. “Illinoisans, like residents in 46 other states, can and should be trusted to responsibly use consumer fireworks and take care of themselves."
Currently, Illinois only allows the legal usage of a few fireworks items, such as sparklers.
