Today in Washburn, U.S. Soldiers who died in combat were honored at a dedication ceremony hosted by the American Legion Post.
It included veterans of both World Wars as well as more recent conflicts. Coordinator Robert Lear lost his brother to a submarine accident in 1989. Lear says the banner is a great way to honor his brother and all Washburn natives who paid the ultimate price.
"It's very gratifying to know that his memory goes on, to see his banner up there, it's very nice to see that."
The hometown hero banners were set up by community volunteers and can be seen hung along the streets throughout downtown Washburn.
