CHILLICOTHE, ILL. (WEEK) -- -

The Chillicothe Post Office now bears the name of a fallen hero with local ties.

U.S Navy Chief Petty Officer William “Ryan” Owens died after a raid in Yemen in January 2017.

The 36-year-old was an Illinois Valley Central High School graduate.

The renaming of the post office in his honor was marked with a ceremony at the city park. He was remembered as a brave hero gone too soon.

During his time as a Navy Seal, he was deployed 12 times. Members of Owens' family said he had a calling to serve his country from a young age.

"Ryan is an American Hero, and he was our hero. Able to do such a difficult job, but always making his presence felt in our lives. Our children were, and are everything to us both,” said his wife, Carryn Owens.

Besides his family, Congressman Darin LaHood and Lieutenant Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti were also on hand for Monday’s ceremony.
