PEORIA, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

The CDC found that over 3,000 people in the United States die from unintentional drownings. 1 in 5 of those people are children under the age of 14.

In order to prevent these incidents, members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority have partnered with the Peoria Park District to support a day that will increase swim safety and awareness.

This coming Thursday the world's largest swim lesson will be held at the Gwynn Family Aquatic Center. The overall goal is to have fun while learning to be safe in the water.

"So, we're hoping to get as many kids as possible ... we want them to learn how to protect themselves in the water and prevent from drowning.", said LaDonna Echols, Member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority.

The event is free and open to the public. However, parents must sign a waiver and accompany their children.
