The Better Business Bureau says scammers ripped off nearly half a million seniors age 65-74 in the past three years.
Thieves target seniors online and over the phone with too-good-to-be-true news.
"Scammers will indicate to the victim that they have won a large sum of money and they just need to send a little bit of money back in order to obtain their winnings," Central Illinois BBB president Jessica Tharp said. "The scams vary a little bit across the board, we've summarized almost five-thousand variations of this type of scam in North America alone."
They estimate that seniors were ripped off to the tune of $117 million in 2017 alone.
