Two traffic crashes caused major delays on Interstate 74 eastbound in East Peoria on Sunday night.
Around 5:45 p.m., the Illinois State Police said a 66-year-old Mississippi man's semi jackknifed near mile post 100. The middle and right hand eastbound lanes of the interstate were closed during removal and cleanup. The driver was not cited.
A second crash happened just before 7 p.m. at mile marker 98 on I-74 eastbound as traffic was intermittently stopped due to the earlier crash. A gold 2006 Hynudai Sonata driven by 18-year-old Raine A.D. Bernard of Morton rear-ended a black 2015 Chevy Traverse, which in turn rear-ended a silver 2016 Toyota 4 Runner, police said.
The left and middle lanes of I-74 eastbound at mile post 98 were closed, with traffic diverted to I-474.
Bernard was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
