Locally, OSF Saint Francis Medical Center is celebrating. They recognized those strong survivors and their caretakers.
The ceremony took place at Luthy Memorial Botanical Garden with a butterfly release to symbolize the joy and hope of moving forward after cancer treatment.
"You know, gardens always symbolize new life and I think that's what a lot of our survivors see is that you know really they have a whole new perspective on life once they finish their treatment. What we hope to do and what their caregivers hope to do is support them on their new path," said Medical Director Mackenzie McGee.
Organizers said they expected about a 100 people and plan something like this once a year.
