Grandma, I was in a car accident in Florida and I need money, can you help?"
Any well-intentioned person would want to help out their grandchild, but Normal police say you need to take some steps to make sure it's real.
In a Facebook post Friday, the department says that a woman in their jurisdiction fell victim to this scam twice. She sent thousands of dollars to the scammer via Fed-Ex.
"Family was able to intersect the package on this occasion and Fed-Ex was very cooperative with reimbursement of the money," the post says.
They say the way to beat this scam is to check with other family members to see if the supposed grandchild is really in trouble.
