Knoxville Ave. project resurfaces antique street car tracks

Posted: Updated:
PEORIA, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

An ongoing construction project on Knoxville Ave. has exposed a little bit of Peoria history.

The Peoria Public Library was invited to go along with Illinois Department of Transportation crews to look at old street car tracks found under the road during recent resurfacing work. The street cars ran from downtown to Corrington, and then to California north to the present-day site of Peoria Stadium, and back to downtown in a big loop.

Street cars ran in Peoria from 1870 to 1946.

The resurfacing has exposed the old tracks and brick pavement. Warping caused by deteriorating wood rail ties under the pavement created a need for patching work before resurfacing can be done.

IDOT will donate some of the rails to local historical organizations, including the Wheels O' Time Museum in Dunlap.
