Knox College among nation's first to ditch plastic straws

GALESBURG, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

Knox College is among the first wave of U.S. higher education institutions to drop plastic and switch to paper. Straws, that is.

The Galesburg college is the third in the nation to switch to paper straws. Americans use more than 500 million straws every day, which is more than enough to wrap around the earth 2.5 times.

The Knox Student Senate Sustainability Commission asked for a complete ban on all straws. The college came to a compromise with food management company Bon Appétit to switch to paper instead.
