Peoria Heights Police warn of new phone scam

Posted: Updated:
PEORIA HEIGHTS, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

If you get a call from the Peoria Heights Police Department telling you to pay a fine, ignore it.

The police department is warning the public of a phone scam currently ongoing. The caller identifies himself as a detective from the Peoria Heights Police Department and tells you you have pending criminal charges against you. The caller also tells you to call a different phone number to pay off fines.

The number is not associated with the police department. The Peoria Heights police said they will never call anyone to collect a fine, but may call and ask persons of interest or witnesses to come into the police station for an interview.

If you receive one of these calls, you are asked to call dispatch at (309) 688-3461 to confirm if police actually need to speak with you.
