The Peoria Zoo's juvenile male giraffe, Finely, is moving to the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago.
Finely will be paired with an adult female to provide non-breeding companionship for her, the Peoria Zoo said in a press release. Finely left Peoria on Friday, May 11.
"This move, as well as Finely's birth, were recommended by the Giraffe Species Survival Plan." said Yvonne Strode, Peoria Zoo Director. "While we are sad to see him leave, we know the transfer helps ensure a healthy giraffe population across the Association of Zoos and Aquariums."
"We are excited for Finely to join us here in Chicago," said Lincoln Park Zoo Curator of Mammals Mike Murray. "Giraffes are a guest favorite here at the zoo and while it will take time, we are eager to introduce him to our female giraffe Etana and eventually the plains zebra that inhabit the savannah at Regenstein African Journey."
Finely was born to parents Taji and Vivian and the Peoria Zoo on July 25, 2016. They will remain, as well as Finely's little sister, Zara, and another adult female, Emy.
