PEORIA, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

Ten people are displaced after an early morning fire at the Villa Bordeaux apartments.

FIrefighters responded to the apartment fire at 4:15 a.m. on a report of people trapped on a balcony by a second floor hall fire. Three people and a cat were trapped. Firefighters raised a ladder to rescue them while another crew put out the hallway fire. The fire was brought under control within 10 minutes.

The hall sustained major fire and smoke damage, and several apartments also sustained smoke damage. One man was taken to OSF Saint Francis for smoke inhalation. Another person was also taken to OSF after bystanders said they jumped off a second floor balcony near the rear of the building to escape the fire.

The Red Cross is providing temporary shelter to the 10 people. Damage is estimated at $200,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
