Coroner says drivers and pedestrians need to be more alert

Posted: Updated:
PEORIA, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

There have been three driver versus pedestrian accidents in one week.

25 News wanted to know why this keep happening.

We talked to Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood on the phone Sunday asking what drivers and pedestrian can do to be safer and prevent this from happening again. The coroner said first, drivers need to be cognizant of pedestrian crosswalks and speed limit signs. He also encouraged walkers to pay attention to the traffic patterns and carry a flash light after dark.

"And to be looking out for people walking every day because not every street has sidewalks. Not every street has a crosswalk. Pedestrians need to make sure they are wearing bright-colored clothing. They need to make sure they cross the streets in crosswalks, well-lit areas, following the 'do not walk' walk signs," said Harwood.

Harwood also said everyone needs to take responsibility. He stated distracted driving and distracted pedestrians can be factors here too.
