NORMAL, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

A man has serious injuries after his parachute malfunctioned.

The parachutist planned to jump into the Corn Crib stadium for the CornBelters opening night game versus Traverse City, Michigan's Beach Bums.

Police on scene said they think the parachute did not open properly. The Normal Police Department was called just after 7:00 p.m. to Traders Circle where the parachutist landed-- about 1,500 feet East of the Corn Crib.

"Early indications are there was some sort of malfunction with his parachute. We do not know what that malfunction was at this point. We don't know anything about the back up chutes, what worked, what didn't,"  said Sergeant Rob Cherry of Normal Police Department.

Police said the man was alive when police arrived on the scene. The parachutists was taken to Advocate BroMenn Hospital.

Officers on the scene said the parachutist is in critical condition.
