EUREKA, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

Woodford County Sheriff Matt Smith has issued a brief statement on the arrest of Robert D. Washburn in connection with the 1986 murder of Jennifer Bastian.

The statement:

The Woodford County Sheriff’s Office served as local agency support to the Detectives from the Tacoma, Washington Police Department, Illinois State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigations in the capture of Robert Washburn for the 1986 murder of 13 year old Jennifer Bastian.

I assigned my detectives to assist with any request from Tacoma PD, ISP or the FBI to bring Mr. Washburn to justice. Mr. Washburn is currently being held at the Woodford County Jail awaiting extradition back to Washington State to stand trial

The Staff at the Woodford County Sheriff’s Office are dedicated to serving our county as well as assisting other agencies that need our assistance. We at the Sheriff’s Office hope that the capture of Robert Washburn will help with closure for the family of Jennifer Bastian and the community of Tacoma Washington.

Prosecutors in Washington state said a DNA sample from Washburn matched bodily fluids on Bastian's body with a probability of error of 1 to 57 trillion.
