Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis is bringing back his summer youth employment program this year. Two dozen students have been selected for the program. Some of their duties will include litter pick up and maintenance of the city's gardens. The city began accepting applications last month.
"Continuing the work they do around mulching, litter pickup and we're adding urban agriculture. There's a number of community gardens," said Peoria public works official Jamila Wilson.
Wilson said the students will also get exposure to other careers by visits to places like Illinois Central College, OSF St. Francis Medical Center and manufacturing companies.
