A trio of firefighters from Peru were honored in a Springfield ceremony Tuesday for their heroism in saving a woman from her burning home.
On Sept. 29, 2017, three Peru firefighters responded to a call for aid from neighboring LaSalle on a house fire. Lt. Neil Nadolski and firefighters Alex Duncan, Ben Bentley and a LaSalle firefighter entered a house with zero visibility due to smoke to help save a woman.
The firefighters called out to the woman, but couldn't hear her due to the yowling of her cats and the roaring fire. The woman was eventually found unresponsive in her recliner. The firefighters took the woman out of her house from a window.
She passed away two weeks later from her injuries.
State Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Peru) and State Rep. Jerry Long (R-Streator) presented the Firefighter Excellence Award and a Senate Certificate of Recognition to the three firefighters during the 25th Annual Illinois Fallen Firefighter Memorial & Firefighting Medal of Honor Award Ceremony.
