The Peoria City/County Health Department is opening a milk depot for the Mother's Milk Bank of the Western Great Lakes this week.
The health department will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday. Banked breast milk is given when a baby's mother cannot provide enough of her own breast milk, or there is a serious illness. Preterm babies fed anything except breast milk are at much greater risk for serious health problems, such as digestive tract inflammation.
The milk depot is a drop off station for busy mothers who wish to donate their breast milk to the bank. The milk depot will package and ship the donor milk to the milk bank.
