The Normal Town Council is considering an ordinance on Monday that is more welcoming to immigrants.
The ordinance would define how police handle situations that involve undocumented immigrants and their communication with ICE.
The Normal Town Council said it is making this recommendation because they believe it's a continuation of their comprehensive plan.
"And basically that plan talks about a community that we believe recognizes the value of empathy and compassion," stated City Manager Pamela Reece.
She added the ordinance would enforce the mission of the Normal Police Department regarding community policing and providing fair and impartial delivery of services.
The ordinance was drafted after conversations with the Keeping Families Together Coalition, an advocacy group on behalf of immigrants.
City Manager Reece said her team sees this as an opportunity to strengthen the community and build relationships.
Reece is also inviting residents to come to Monday's meeting if they would like to weigh in on the decision.
