Local girl heading to St. Jude for treatment after special graduation ceremony

Posted: Updated:
FARMER CITY, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

A local girl whose cancer has returned is heading to St. Jude in Memphis for treatment - but not before her high school held a special graduation ceremony for her.

Lexi Peterson of Farmer City was first diagnosed with cancer in August 2013. After three years of chemotherapy, blood transfusions, two hip replacements, a shoulder replacement and knee surgery, Peterson completed her treatment.

She then headed back to Blue Ridge High School in Farmer City to complete her education and work towards her ultimate goal of becoming a nurse at St. Jude. Unfortunately, Peterson found out she has cancer again on March 30.

Blue Ridge High School held a special graduation ceremony just for Peterson last week before she headed back to Memphis with her family.

Lexi and her family left for Memphis over the weekend, where she will receive chemotherapy, radiation and a bone marrow transplant in her battle to defeat cancer a second time.
