PEORIA, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

A 24-year-old Peoria man killed by gunfire late Saturday on the city's South Side was shot 10 times.

The Peoria County Coroner said John Bell III likely died instantly. He was pronounced dead at the corner of Wyoming and Oregon at 10:12 p.m. Saturday on the sidewalk outside the New Jerusalem Church.

Bell was struck twice in the back of the head, and also struck in the torso and extremities, Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said. Harwood said Bell likely died instantly.

A final autopsy report will not be available for a few weeks pending toxicology results, but Harwood said the results should not change Bell's cause of death.

The case is under investigation.
