Illinois American Water will operate another area municipal water system.
The company finalized the purchase Thursday after the Farmington City Council approved the sale of the system in March 2017 and the Illinois Commerce Commission signed off on the deal. The approximately 1,125 Farmington water customers will now fall under the IAW system.
Farmington Mayor Kent Kowal said his city welcomes the sale. IAW said they will invest $5 million in the first five years of ownership, including a study this year on improving water pressure and fire flow. The company will also replace water mains and install equipment to loop water mains.
New customers will receive an information packet about billing and account management in the mail.
IAW also serves residents in Peoria, Pekin, and several other area communities.
