A Peoria man was able to put out a garage fire with his garden hose, but lost several vehicles with personal value in the process.
Peoria firefighters responded to the house fire in the 600 block of W. Wilcox just after 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Crews found an overhead garage door opener on fire and heavy smoke pouring from the attic window of the attached garage. The garage door opener fire was extinguished with a fire extinguisher by firefighters.
Firefighters then vented the attic area of the garage to remove smoke and heat. The resident of the house put out the car fire with a garden hose before firefighters arrived. The man suffered from smoke inhalation, but was treated and released at the scene by paramedics.
The car sustained major damage, and the garage sustained smoke and heat damage. The man later told 25 news three collectible hot rods and a motorcycle passed down from a relative were damaged or destroyed in the fire. Total damage is estimated at $111,000.
