Beware of door-to-door salesmen looking to sell you on a new electric supplier. That was the message shared at a news conference in Peoria hosted by the Citizens Utilities Board, or CUB, and AARP today. Officials with those organizations are stressing that consumers should be skeptical of door-to-door deals and offers over the phone from unregulated energy suppliers.
"People are being taken for a ride by these alternate electric suppliers. a lot of times people sign up, the rate will be okay for a couple of months, and then it will double or triple," shares Bryan McDaniel with the Citizens Utility Board.
CUB and AARP are encouraging Illinois residents to contact legislators and urge them to support house bill 5101. They say the bill will rein in what they call bad marketing practices by alternative electric suppliers.
