PEORIA, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

A Peoria firefighter has passed away after a long battle with cancer.

Nick Riordan was diagnosed with metastatic neuroendocrine carcinoma last May, with a new baby girl on the way. He and his wife Sarah started a GoFundMe last year to raise money for medical costs, and a Facebook group, Team Riordan: Nick's Crew

"It is with great sadness We report that our good-friend, Brother and co-worker Nick Riordan has passed away. Please continue to keep the Riordan's in your thoughts and prayers," said a Facebook post Tuesday from the Eureka-Goodfield Fire Protection District, where he formerly worked as a paramedic.

Several community fundraisers and benefits were also held on Riordan's behalf.

The next benefit is set for April 7, 2018 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 7403 N. Radnor in Peoria.  Peoria Fire Department Division Chief of Operations Tony Ardis said the benefit will go on this weekend.
