Vigil planned after Galesburg mother of two killed by stray bullet at birthday celebration

GALESBURG, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

A mother of two gunned down outside a bar in Galesburg and police have a person of interest.

Police say 26-year-old Jenni McGruder was the victim of a stray bullet. She was leaving her 26th birthday with friends and family when police say a fight spilled out of the pub.

Gun shots rang out. One of the bullets hit and killed Jenni. Police now said they have a person of interest in the case, but they need an eyewitness.

One of her long-time friends is hoping someone finds the courage.

"She took the stray bullet, and that doesn't change anything. Somebody's dead and somebody has to face the consequences. Somebody just has to step up and say something,” said Graham Archer, McGruder’s friend.

If you have any information, please contact the Galesburg Police Detective Kevin Legate at  345-3765, Galesburg Area Crime Stoppers at  344-0044 or you can text "GALESBURG" then the tip to 274637.

A GoFundMe was started to help her husband provide for their two children. The campaign so far has raised $30,000.

A candlelight vigil is also planned for 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Galesburg municipal parking lot in the 100 block of S. Seminary St.
