Road sign thefts investigated in McLean County

SAYBROOK, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

The McLean County Sheriff's Office is investigating the theft of several road signs near Saybrook.

The sheriff's office said the thefts happened between March 5 and March 9. The signs were removed from a railroad crossing near the Indian Springs subdivision, the intersections of 4200 E. Rd. and 950 N. Road, and 4000 E. Rd. about half a mile north of 825 N. Rd.

Other signs were damaged by shotgun pellets and bullets. In one instance, a sign post was pulled from the ground and thrown into a field. The post was sunk 42 inches into the ground, so authorities believe a vehicle was involved in yanking it out.

"In addition to being unlawful, the theft of road signs presents a danger to motorists and places a burden on the township and taxpayers in the township financially," said the sheriff's office in a Facebook post.

Anyone with information should call the McLean County Sheriff's Office at 309-888-5019.
