It might be possible to keep chickens in your backyard in East Peoria soon if the city approves a new ordinance.
The East Peoria Zoning Board of Appeals will take up consideration of an ordinance to allow East Peoria residents to keep up to five hens in backyards after a special use permit is issued. The ordinance states the chickens must be constantly confined in an enclosure made of wire mesh or another material deemed suitable by a building inspector. The enclosure cannot exceed 100 feet.
Once a resident submits an application for a special use permit, neighbors will be notified and able to weigh in.
Roosters would be prohibited.
The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 12 in the City Council Chambers of the East Peoria city complex, 401 W. Washington. Residents will be able to weigh in with the zoning board. The final decision on the ordinance will be up to the city council.
