NCWHS students processing grief after student's death

Posted: Updated:

The McLean County State's Attorney's office said it could be a few weeks before more details are released about the accident that killed a Normal Community West High School student.   Meanwhile her friends and family are left coping with that sudden and tragic loss.

Olivia Sonetz died Wednesday from injuries she sustained during the accident at Mitsubishi Parkway and Raab Road.    Illinois State police said that Sonetz car had been stopped at a traffic light and proceeded to go through it after it turned green.
Authorities said that's when a pickup truck blew through the light crashing into the car.   Now there is a makeshift memorial at the scene of the crash.   Thursday students at Normal Community West High school wrote notes on  white boards to help them process their grief.    The principal called Sonetz a good role model.

"Livi was a mentor for students, so every day she got to help other students learn what it means to be a wildcat and help them become high school students and be successful students here at West.    She touched a lot of different students here at west," said Normal Community West High School Principal Dave Johnson.

The principal said students enjoyed being around Sonetz, who was also a member of the softball team.   Authorities said the driver of the pickup truck 23-year-old Mitchell Mohr suffered minor injuries.    He is facing charges of disobeying a stop light, speeding and failure to wear a seat belt.   The McLean County State's Attorney's office said state police are continuing their investigation.    Right now it's unclear if there will be more charges.
