Pekin City Hall was evacuated Thursday morning after a pipe bomb was found in a safe stored as police evidence.
Pekin Public Information Officer Billie Ingles said police arrested a suspect on meth charges during a traffic stop just before 1:30 a.m. Thursday. A safe found in the vehicle was confiscated as evidence and logged. The safe was found to contain a pipe bomb after police got a warrant to open the safe.
The city hall building was evacuated around 10:15 a.m. The Peoria Police Department bomb squad responded and were able to safely detonate the explosive device.
Ingles said everyone was evacuated from the building safely. The city hall building also houses the Pekin Police Department.
An all-clear was given around 12:45 p.m., and city employees returned to work.
