Counselors were on hand Wednesday after a Normal West Community High School varsity softball player and senior was killed in a car crash Tuesday night.
A Unit 5 spokesperson said guidance counselors have organized a grief center for students and staff needing support. The softball coach also held a meeting with her team this morning, and an announcement was made to all students at the beginning of first period.
A counselor is at each class on her schedule to help as needed. Comfort dogs were also present Wednesday.
17-year-old Olivia "Livi" Sonetz was transferred to OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria from Advocate BroMenn. Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said he was notified of Sonetz's death on Wednesday, where she was pronounced dead in the intensive care unit just after 5 p.m.
The accident happened just after sunset Tuesday on Mitsubishi Parkway and Raab Road in Normal.
Illinois State Police believe that Sonetz had stopped at a red light, moving forward when that light turned green. Police believe 23 year-old Mitchell Mohr blew that light, hitting the teenager's car. Sonetz was wearing a seatbelt.
Mohr is now facing citations for disobeying a stop light, speeding, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and failure to wear a seat belt.
