ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) - A proposed bill would allow the Chicago Rockford International Airport to expand its corporate authority and tax thousands of additional people in the county.
The Rockford Register reports that Democratic state Rep. Jay Hoffman of Bellville introduced the legislation. Regional airports in Moline and Bloomington would also have the ability to expand their property tax reach to the entire county where they're located.
Chicago Rockford International Airport Executive Director Mike Dunn says widening the airport's property tax reach in Winnebago County could provide an estimated $1 million annually.
Carl Olson is the airport director of the Central Illinois Regional Airport in Bloomington. He says the airport would lower its property tax rate to collect the same amount of taxes dispersed among a larger pool of taxpayers.
