PEORIA, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

The Peoria National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research is again slated for closure in a presidential budget proposal.

The lab is among a list of USDA facilities slated for closure in President Donald Trump's 2019 budget. A presidential budget proposal last year also proposed the closure last year.

Rep. Darin LaHood (R-Peoria) and Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-Moline) worked together to find funding to keep the facility open during the last budget cycle. Several other members of the Illinois delegation also signed a letter appealing to keep the facility's doors open.

The Peoria Ag Lab is perhaps best known as the place where the mass production of penicillin was invented.
