Winter storm set to impact central Illinois

Posted: Updated:

****Winter Storm Warning - 6 PM Thursday - 6 PM Friday*****

- Bureau, Putnam, and La Salle Counties

****Winter Storm Watch - Thursday PM - Friday PM*****

- Stark and Marshall Counties.

Round #1: Thursday - Friday Forecast:

Where: Along and north of I-80 (heaviest snowfall amounts).

Timing: Thursday night through Friday evening.

Forecast

Snowfall will start in northern Illinois by 7 PM this evening. This will be a long duration event that will extend through most of Friday evening for areas along and north of I-80. There will be tight gradients between heavy, moderate, and light snowfall accumulations with round 1.

Totals along I-80 will range from around 6-8". To the south of I-80 in Marshall and Stark Counties snowfall will range from 3-6". Farther south near Peoria Metro, totals are expected to range from 1-3".

Confidence Level

My confidence level on where the heaviest snowfall will be is high. Areas north of I-80/I-88 will take the brunt of round 1. That's where accumulation could reach near a foot in some areas.

The forecast gets tricky the farther south we go. The cut-off for heavy accumulations appears to be just to the south of I-80. However, the problem is there will be a quick drop off from getting 6+ inches to just near 2-3".

Round #2: Saturday through Sunday:

Where: All of central Illinois.

Timing: Early Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon:

Forecast

There remains some uncertainty with the track of round 2, but confidence is growing this morning. Storm #2 will impact areas mainly south of I-80 and along I-74 through Sunday afternoon. This will probably end up being the best chance for snow in the Peoria area during this 3-4 day window.

After Sunday totals near I-80 should range from 6-10". While just south of I-80 into Marshall, Stark, and Putnam Counties accumulations should be near 5-8". Farther south near Peoria and extending near the Twin Cities, snowfall accumulations could reach near 4-6" with areas south of Bloomington-Normal receiving less.

Confidence Level

Confidence is growing with round #2 with heavier bands of snow tracking through the I-74 corridor. This would give Peoria/Bloomington-Normal a good chance of receiving snowfall accumulations near that 4-6" range.

Snow Accumulation Forecast Through Sunday

- Areas along I-80: 6-10"

- Marshall, Stark, Putnam: 5-8"

- Peoria, McLean, Areas near I-74: 4-6"

- South of Twin Cities: 1-3"

I'll have more details on the snow threat through your Thursday!
