Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said suspect Daniel El was shot 16 times during an early morning encounter Thursday with Peoria police officers on Peoria's south side.
Preliminary autopsy findings show El had eight penetrating wounds with projectiles recovered from the body, five perforating wounds with exits, and three graze wounds. El was shot in the chest, abdomen, pelvis and extremities.
El and police exchanged gunfire in the 2700 block of SW Jefferson around 2:30 a.m. Thursday after El allegedly fled from a traffic stop for a stop sign violation in the area of Western and Lincoln. Police said El lost control of the vehicle around Garden and Warren and fled on foot.
A Peoria police officer was also injured in the exchange of gunfire. The officer is in the hospital with a non life-threatening injury to the torso and is in stable condition.
El was taken to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 3:23 a.m.
The Illinois State Police are investigating the incident. Three Peoria police officers were placed on paid administrative leave following the incident.
