Officer wounded in El shooting released

UPDATE 2/07: The officer who was wounded in the Daniel El shooting has been released from the hospital, according to Peoria Police Public Information Officer Amy Dotson.

Dotson would not confirm any other details of the investigation, which is being handled by Illinois State Police, and similarly would not release the officer's identity. 

UPDATE 9 AM: Peoria Police Spokeswoman Amy Dotson tells 25 News that an unidentified police officer suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound and is in stable condition at a local hospital after an early morning shooting. 

The incident began around 2:36 a.m., following a traffic stop in the area of Western and Lincoln.

Police said the male suspect's vehicle fled the traffic stop before losing control in the area of Garden and Warren. Officers found the suspect in the 2700 block of SW Jefferson, where there was an exchange of gunfire. 

One officer was struck by gunfire and taken to a local hospital. The suspect was also shot at the scene, and was taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Neither the officer nor the suspect's identities have been released. 

Roads are still closed, and several businesses in the area are currently inaccessible. 


A Peoria Police officer has been shot during an overnight shooting.

It happened around 2:45 AM Thursday morning in the 2700 block of West Jefferson, near the intersection of Apple.

The condition of the officer is unknown at this time, but they have been taken to the hospital.

A male suspect is at large, but we do not have a description of the suspect.
