UPDATE: Morton firefighter killed in car accident late Thursday

MORTON, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

UPDATE 12:20 p.m.: Morton Fire Chief Joe Kelley said Morton Firefighter Josh Greene was the man killed in Thursday night's accident on Mossy Trail and Timber Creek. 

"Josh was know to all of us as friendly, always smiling and involved in our department in many ways. Our hearts go out to Josh's wife, children and his entire family. He will be missed amongst our Morton Fire Department family as well," said Kelley in a Facebook post. 

Greene joined the Morton Fire Department in 2000.

Funeral arrangements are pending.


A Morton man is dead after a late Thursday crash.

The Morton Police Department responded to Mossy Trail and Timber Creek in Morton just before midnight on a report of a moving vehicle hitting a parked vehicle. 

Morton officers on scene found a 42-year-old Morton man lying unconscious in the roadway. He was a front seat passenger ejected from the moving vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending family notification. 

The driver of the vehicle, 52-year-old Glen T. Abney of Morton, was ticketed for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving under the influence and aggravated driving under the influence. Abney was taken to UnityPoint Health-Methodist with injuries. 

Accident reconstructionists from the Morton Police Department and Tazewell County Sheriff's Office are investigating.
