Furniture store slated for second floor of former Peoria Macy's

PEORIA, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

A Chicago-area furniture outlet will move in to the second floor of the old Macy's location at Northwoods Mall.

A permit was issued by the city of Peoria for The Roomplace, a city employee told 25 News over the phone. The Lombard, Ill. based furniture chain operates 22 stores in Illinois and Indiana, including a showroom in Rockford. Peoria would be the chain's first downstate location.

Northwoods Mall marketing director Bob Schertz confirmed pre-construction has begun at the building, but did not tell 25 News what kind of store is coming, saying only that it is a retailer without a current Peoria location.

The store is expected to open in late spring or early summer of 2018.

The Roomplace has confirmed to 25 News that it is coming to Northwoods Mall.

The Macy's department store closed in Peoria in 2016. The building sat vacant for more than a year. Entertainment complex Round1 opened in the first floor of the old outlet late last year.
