UPDATE 12 p.m.: Poor visibility may be to blame for a four-vehicle pileup on I-74 Thursday morning.
The Illinois State Police said a 30-year-old Peoria woman was driving a Pontiac Grand Am on Interstate 74 in East Peoria near the Pinecrest exit when she had difficulty seeing due to bright sun and road salt buildup. She pulled her car onto the shoulder. A second car driven by a 31-year-old Peoria woman who was also suffering from poor visibility.
The second car was halfway down the shoulder when it struck the first car. A third car slowed down when the driver saw the accident. A semi tractor-trailer could not stop in time and swerved to avoid striking the third car. The semi struck the third car from behind and slid into a ditch. The semi's trailer remained on the road and hit the first two cars.
The drivers of the three cars were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries.
The crash is still under investigation.
UPDATE: The road is now cleared. There isn't any word on any injuries yet.
Emergency responders are currently on scene of a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 74 in East Peoria.
Lanes are blocked near mile post 97 eastbound, near the Pinecrest Exit. The right lane is blocked. The left lane is open and moving slowly with traffic.
