With no opposition in the final vote, Normal's town council tonight approved a property tax hike of nearly 6%
. But there were plenty of opposing voices in the crowd.
Town leaders say they have to raise the taxes in order to fund fire and police pensions.
"My quality of life will be lower. I hope Council understands that this tax increase is a burden on the average person, the average Joe. Me," said Jarrod Rackauskas, one of at least a dozen opponents to speak Monday.
"The reason you need this tax increase is because you have indebted the Town of Normal so badly that you can't even pay the interest," said Angela Scott.
The owner of a home in the $160,000 range can expect to see a tax hike of around $40 bucks this spring.
